Event: Creative Responses to Sustainability with Yasmine Ostendorf

On 28 February 2017, Ecoscholars hosted Yasmine Ostendorf, a writer in residence at Ecologic Institute, for a talk on the role or art and artistic expression in fostering sustainability.

Yasmine Ostendorf is a writer and arts curator with over a decade of professional work experience in the international cultural field. She has been based in the Netherlands, the UK, South-Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan where she has been researching, curating and lecturing about art, design and culture that positively contributes to society; i.e creative work that explores, questions and addresses our social and environmental responsibility. In 2012 she founded The Green Art Lab Alliance (GALA), a knowledge alliance dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability for the cultural sector. The various partners work on the concept of sustainability in practical, ethical, and artistic ways, across art and cultural communities. It is a collaborative and growing programme, a content-related alliance based on the sharing of data and knowledge between cultural organisations, policymakers, curators, artists and designers in Europe (20 partners) and Asia (15 partners). In March 2017 she will take up a new position at the Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, developing programming for the brand new Jac. P Thijsse Lab. The Jac. P. Thijsse Lab, named after a famous Maastricht ecologist, is the Van Eyck's Lab for nature research. The Lab enables artists to explore in depth, through their work, their relation to nature. It gives them an opportunity to do active research (literally, to get their hands dirty) and to consider the subject of landscape in relation to ecological and urban development issues.

Yasmine publishes her findings in a series of sustainability guides, which outline the most innovative and artistic approaches to tackling environmental problems in each host country or city (click here for an example). At the moment, she is researching to produce a similar guide for Berlin as a writer in residence at Ecologic Institute and Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS).
