Event: Energy, Complexity and Governance

On 18 March 2013, Ecoscholars hosted a talk by François Diaz-Maurin, Post-doctoral Fellow, Integrated Assessment: Sociology, Technology and the Environment (IASTE) Research Group, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. During this talk François Diaz-Maurin presented his research in the field of integrated assessment of energy systems, with a focus on the predicament of nuclear power. François also presented the work of his research group on how to deal with the governance of natural resources adopting a complex thinking approach, using their recent collaborations with FAO and the Government of Ecuador.

François Diaz-Maurin is an Engineer with expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects in the French and US nuclear industries. In the late 2010, he left the USA to join the Integrated Assessment research group of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and work with Prof. Mario Giampietro on the application of MuSIASEM (Multi-Scale Integrated Analysis of Societal and Ecosystem Metabolism) to energy supply issues. François recently completed his PhD thesis on assessing the viability and desirability of nuclear power with a newly developed protocol to compare the quality of different alternative energy sources.
